Most worn this summer (2017)
I know we still have a little bit left of official summer, but Labor Day just always seems like the end of the season. After-school tutoring has started back up at 826CHI, September temps are chillier than usual here in Chicago, and I’ve already swapped out my summery door wreath for a fall version. Summer might not be over just yet, but it definitely feels like we’re already well into autumn!
So, since I’ve already moved on to the Barbour-and-boots portion of my closet, it’s time for my seasonal wardrobe wrap-up. I try to do these quarterly so I can keep track of the pieces I end up relying on over and over again throughout each season. Taking a step back and looking closely at what I’ve worn allows me to better prioritize my shopping budget and know which inadvertent staples can be upgraded to a better quality version, or which pieces will definitely need to be included should I ever getting around to creating a capsule closet.
So, here’s what I’ve found myself gravitating toward this past summer.

Cami sundress. I fell in love with a printed version of this dress mid-summer, and ended up ordering a few more colors (palm print, black, red floral, white floral) to meet the free shipping minimum, figuring I’d return them. However, I ended up loving them all so much that I just decided to keep them, and they’ve been on steady rotation all summer.
Denim jacket. I can’t bring myself to get on board with the patches-and-enamel-pins trend, but I’ve been relying on a simple distressed denim jacket more than usual this season to drag along in case I need to stave off a chilly summer night breeze.
Panama hat. I’ve been trying to make a habit of keeping my skin protected from the sun, and this hat — along with a boatload of SPF — has been an absolute staple for beach days and afternoon city walks.
Jack Rogers sandals. What’s summer without a pair of Jack Rogers?
Strappy black sandals. These strappy sandals with chunky heels are surprisingly comfortable, and are great for bar nights or happy hour meet-ups.
Sleeveless button-up. I have this Express favorite in a few colors, but the plain white has been my go-to for tucking into midi skirts, or wearing with skinny slacks and a cardigan.
Black a-line dress. Who pays $120 to have an $18 clearance dress tailored? That would be me, but when you find the perfect LBD that works for the office, cocktails and family events, you go for it.
Chino shorts. I always add a pair or two of these J. Crew chino shorts to my collection every fall, when new colors are added to the retailer’s clearance section. They’re great, timeless staples that can be found for as low as $15 a pair at the end of summer.
V-neck tees. I’m very much a jeans-and-tee kind of girl, and these soft and simple t-shirts are my favorites.
Striped shirt. I think Saint James stripes are a pretty common summer staple, myself included.
Chambray button-up. I think I will include this on every single list of every single season of every single year, because it’s an incredibly versatile piece.
So, there you have it! A summer wardrobe full of white eyelets, chino shorts, navy-and-white stripes, sundresses… absolutely no surprises.
Now, onto the scarves, boots and layers. I’m ready for fall!
(Oh, and PS: The ice cream is Lickity Split! It’s an adorable retro custard shop in the Edgewater neighborhood on Chicago’s far North Side. It’s a little bit of a hike for a lot of Chicagoans, but the amazing vintage candy and soda collection — plus the custard sundaes, shakes and malts — makes the trek totally worth it.)
