What I read: June 2024

June 30, 2024 July 3, 2024 Randi665 views

It’s summer reading season!

We’ve had a few fires here and there, so thanks to work (and the trip to Chicago I’m on right now) I didn’t get much of a chance to do a whole lot of reading.

Regardless, I did manage to fit in one book this month.

Is this a necessary book? No. Will I read it? Yes.

(As a reminder: I always track my reading both on Goodreads and via Instagram stories.)

‘THE HOUSEMAID IS WATCHING‘ BY FREIDA MCFADDEN

Millie may be a convicted felon, but she’s finally starting to feel almost normal. She — along with her husband, Enzo, and two children — have just moved to a beautiful single-family house on Long Island. But, once she starts to meet the neighbors, Millie starts to feel a little unsettled. First there’s Suzette, a woman who pays her own husband no mind while relentlessly flirting with Enzo and offering Millie backhanded compliment after backhanded compliment. Then there’s Janice, who always seems to be watching and judging from across the street. After a while, Millie begins to wonder. Was the move a mistake?

I read both “The Housemaid” and “The Housemaid’s Secret,” so of course I picked this one up. One of the Goodreads reviews for this book was “is this a necessary addition to the housemaid and the housemaid’s secret? no. am I still going to read it? yes 🤷🏽‍♀️” …and I feel like that review sums this book up well. It was super easy to read (and gave me a nice chance to dissociate from Real Life), but also, nothing actually happened until 60 percent of the way through the book. Millie’s quirky naivety is officially old and I found most of this book getting frustrated with her repetitive short sentences that said the same thing over and over and over. It was easy to read but had zero substance.

Happy reading!
