Planes, trains, automobiles and bikes?

I made a pretty big commitment the other day, guys. Ready to meet him? OK. This is Henrik.

Yes, Henrik as in Henrik Zetterberg.

Isn’t he gorgeous? Henrik is my brand new Giant Escape 3 bicycle! And, at the age of 23, this is my first real grown-up bike. Shocking, right?

I started looking at getting a bike about three weeks ago at the suggestion of Michigan’s gas prices. ($4.30 a gallon? No can do.) I wasn’t really sure where to start looking, but thankfully, God blessed me with a former competitive road racer as a boyfriend. (Really- ask him about the time he got his bicycle up to 73 mph down a mountainside.) Jake was kind enough to look at bikes for me, break down the different bike types and help me figure out what kind of bike I wanted to use for what purpose.

At first, I was looking at a single-speed $250 cruiser bicycle to get me to work and back. But, after Jake had me test-ride a few models at Motorless Motion in Mt. Pleasant and Village Bike Shop in Grand Rapids, I decided a hybrid bike would be worth the extra money.

I invested about $500 in this bike and all its components, and I 100 percent do not regret that decision.

Even though I initially bought my bike to take to work and back, I’ve been biking everywhere, just for fun. I absolutely love it, and I’m looking forward to spending the rest of the summer logging more miles (and saving more gas money) with Henrik.

How do you get around?
