Because I love all things glittery and trendy and fashion-y, I enrolled in a fashion class at my university this semester.
I needed a three-credit class for financial aid reasons, and rather than take another 700-level polisci class, I decided to take something a little more fun: AMD 256: Introduction to the Fashion Industry.
It’s actually a lot more informative than I thought it would be. We’ve already learned so much about the ins and outs of the industry, from terminology to how merchandising works to the design process timeline and how fashion forecasting works.
For an assignment, we were asked to look through publications — including magazines, trend reports and other fashion media outlets — to judge what the coming spring trends would be.
We had to make boards for color, silhouette, mood, fabrication and detail.
This is what my group came up with.
As a disclaimer, I didn’t put the boards together. I made the layouts of the boards and my group members combed Vogue, Cosmo and New York Fashion Week recaps online to get the photos to add to the boards.
Our trend forecasts? Color was easy to pick. We relied on the recently-released Pantone color report. We looked to the NYFW runway trends to grab the rest. Feathers, mix-and-match textile finishes, unfinished hems, heavy box-and-knife pleats, and 70’s-era flared hems also seem to be up-and-coming according to my group.
I personally love the earthy colors, heavy pleats and mix-and-match textiles. I’m not a fan of the resurgence of flares or the unfinished hem nonsense. I like tucking my pants into my boots for convenience in the snow and rain, and my personal aesthetic is much too polished for unfinished hems!
Working with old school cardstock and Mod Podge was definitely hard to get used to after extensive use of InDesign and Photoshop over the last few years. I got so used to resizing images with the click of a button, I forgot how hard it used to be to lay images out without being able to adjust their sizes!
Would you rock any of these trends? What do you think will be up-and-coming this spring? Let me know in the comments!
