Spring fashion: Looking ahead!

February 5, 2015 February 5, 2015 Randi31 comments1103 views

The logic of fashion is something that has always intrigued me. When you think about it, clothing that is “suddenly” trendy didn’t pop up overnight. I learned this in my “Introduction to the Fashion Industry” class I enrolled in last semester. The whole process — sourcing materials, creating a design, putting the design together, marketing it to buyers and offering it to consumers — takes a lot of time. This means that trends don’t just happen overnight! Years of planning goes into fashion, so when you think about it, the super trendy stuff you’re wearing now was conceptualized between a year and two years ago!

For my job, I was tasked with writing a lifestyles story about upcoming fashion trends and how they will translate into prom dresses. I called up my fashion class instructor today and talked with him a little bit about upcoming spring trends and how they’ll relate to prom. Obviously, many of the themes we’ll be seeing this coming spring have nothing to do with prom. But, fashion is inspirational and malleable, meaning anything from the spring 2015 runway is easily adaptable for any occasion, whether it’s for formal occasions, like prom, or everyday ready-to-wear, like street style or workwear.

(As an aside, when I took my Introduction to the Fashion Industry class, we had a project revolving around trend forecasting. You can read about it here!)

Now that retailers are starting to bring in their spring lines (even though it seems like winter is never going to end here in Michigan), we can start to see some of these trends making their way into stores.

So what trends did my instructor predict we’d be seeing a lot of?

  • Colors: dusty roses, dusty blues, champagnes and bright yellows
  • Longer hemlines (maxis are still around!)
  • Statement gems and rhinestones
  • Embroidery, beading and lace detailing
  • Oriental-inspired garments (think kimonos and silks)
  • 70’s-inspired garments (fringe and flares)

Here are some of my favorite ready-to-wear ways of rocking these upcoming trends this spring.

Could you see yourself wearing any of these upcoming spring trends? What trends are you most looking forward to wearing in a few months? Let me know in the comments!

I’ve never really been one to follow trends – I just wear clothes that I like, can afford, and feel great in! That being said, I’m a big fan of embroidery and even more so, lace detailing. So I’m exciting to see that pop up more!

Good insight! Some trends I hate (why is everything still sheer), but some I love to embrace way past their acceptance (like skater skirts- can those stay around?) I agree that wearing what you feel great in (and can afford) is probably the most important thing to look for when shopping. 🙂

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! I am so glad embroidery and beading is in! I just love all the details, it can make a jacket look so expensive and cool.

And there are so many ways to do embroidery and beading! I always love versatile trends because I can rock it one way and someone else can rock it entirely differently!

This is so interesting! I want to take a fashion class now haha It’s so strange how trends are created. A couple weeks ago I found a long dusty blue cardigan at the thrift store and it must have been my subconscious seeing that kind of trend being placed around me that made me buy it. Who knows :p I want winter to be over so I can start wearing spring clothes!

It was definitely one of the more interesting classes I’ve ever taken – it was so cool to see the science behind the entire industry! Is there a chance you have a post on that cardigan? If not, I hope I’ll be seeing it soon!

Topshop is one of my faves too! They had an INSANE sale when I stopped by in Chicago last weekend, to the point you couldn’t move because everyone was shoulder-to-shoulder and it was overwhelming. My buys made it worth it though!

Oh my this looks like such a fun and interesting class! I didn’t realize how early trends were concocted prior to their introduction into the fashion scene! Thank you for a really informative and interesting post!
If your predictions are accurate (and you seem like a smart cookie so I’ll assume you’re correct c; ) I am pretty excited about the longer hem-lines. As someone who tries to dress more on the modest side, I have not yet been able to pull off longer hemlines for some reason, but I hope to give them another try next season if there will be more opportunity to buy!
Although I do agree with Kathryn in that trends are usually not a deciding factor in how I dress 🙂

Once you start thinking about the industry, it’s absolutely crazy to learn all the science behind it! Way more research into things like demographics and psychographics goes into the industry than I thought. People got kind of judge-y when I said I was taking a fashion class, but it was really, really educational!
I also tend to dress somewhat modestly, but at 5’5″, I’m kind of short, so I’m still trying to figure out how to pull off maxi hems!

I mean, if my professor’s predictions are accurate, it’s two trends in one (dusty blue and lace), so you’re basically getting double for your money… right? 🙂 #shoppinglogic

I agree- comfort and convenience is my No. 1 priority, but if you can have comfort, convenience and style, why not take all three? 🙂

I’m so looking forward to spring!! Mainly so there’s no more snow, but also so I can mix up my wardrobe a bit. I guess it’s a good thing that I kept my flares! I have two pairs that I haven’t worn in years, but haven’t been able to part with them either. Maybe 2015 will be their year!

I hope so too! I hate flares for winter because tucking my pants into my boots is so convenient, but I think they look lovely in the spring!

I know! I love statement pieces. I think it’s because I have such a simple (ie: boring) style that I love having one piece that speaks for itself.
