Floral fun: roses, tulips, lilies, daisies

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hopefully you’re all out spending time with your loved ones and not stalking the cybersphere today. But, if you’re like me and stuck at work or at home, I put together a pretty compilation of floral arrangement shots for you to gaze at.

As part of a work assignment (I know, my job is so rough sometimes) I went to my local flower shop – Norm’s Flower Petal – to chat with the owners about floral arrangements and holiday preparation. I took a few photos while I was there.

As an aside, this is the last gallery my poor Canon 18-55mm kit lens shot before it broke. RIP.

The assistant manager of Norm’s Flower Petal, Elle Godley, said the shop fulfills between 400 and 500 orders every holiday, and preparations start two weeks beforehand. Elle is the third generation of her family to manage the shop, and because her family has owned the store for 75 years, she grew up with an eye for detail and the ability to put together a picture-perfect floral arrangement without any sort of eHow guide or YouTube tutorial. So cool, right?

Elle said that while roses are always a Valentine’s Day classic, this year’s floral orders were also saturated with requests for gerbera daisies, lilies and tulips.

I, personally, wouldn’t particularly mind getting a bouquet of any of the aforementioned.

Here’s the full gallery of photos I put together for my newspaper, and here’s an accompanying story if you care to read.

What are you doing to celebrate today’s holiday? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO!

These are such beautiful blooms! My partner and I are just having a low key day of hanging out and spending some quality time together. I did some baking (my favourite activity!) and we’re making dinner together tonight too.

I’m so sorry to hear about your lens!! What happened? I’m not the gentlest with my camera and I’m always terrified of breaking it or the lens, but *knock on wood* nothing bad has happened yet.

Your day sounds so low key and nice! We have a winter weather advisory so I’m definitely glad I didn’t have out ot town plans, and I can’t wait to see the blog post that comes from your day in the kitchen!

And I’m just a klutz! The camera strap caught on my desk edge at work and fell. I reached out to catch it and cut my hand open but still failed, and it landed right on the corner of the lens and broke the front element entirely off. I’m really upset about it, but I had been planning on getting a new lens with my tax return regardless. I just had to bite the bullet a little earlier than expected. Moral of the story: guard your equipment with your life!

Thank you! The shop is half a block down and across the street from my apartment, so it was cool to stop inside the back room of somewhere I drive past every day and learn a little more about it. Fresh flowers are so lovely!

Sadly my husband worked all day so we didn’t get to spend any time together… wah! But he did come home and got me a full-length mirror… haha I had been complaining that I needed a new one and I thought it was sweet he actually listened and got one on his own 😛

I love when guys listen and you don’t have to nag! Seriously, everyone’s just so much happier when that happens, right!? I’m glad you got a Valentine’s surprise even if you didn’t get to spend the day together.

But you like Val more than the flower (I hope) so it all works out… right?
