Live at Chicago’s Subterranean: Nightly

March 22, 2019 August 31, 2022 Randi1630 views

Soooo my dumb self decided in January that it’d be TOTALLY FINE to go to a show on the other side of town on a Tuesday night knowing damn well I had to work at 6 a.m. the next morning.

Anyway. I saw Nightly at Subterranean over in Wicker Park this past week and if you haven’t heard of them, you should definitely give them a listen.

Nightly at Subterranean in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.

I’ll keep this quick because frankly, I know you’re tired of my taste in music and also I have another concert post coming this weekend. ?

My taste in music is pretty easy to define — Spotify likes to remind me that it’s considered “dance pop” every time I get my wrapped playlist at the end of the year.

Spotify is awesome because its algorithms make it so easy to find new music that suits my tastes.

Kids these days have it easy. They’ll never know the pain of scouring PureVolume for the coolest new bands your friends haven’t heard yet at like, 3 a.m. after two cans of Monster Energy.

Nightly’s one of those bands that popped up on my Discover Weekly playlist. I immediately clicked over to their artist page and started listening to their top songs, and my first thought was “oh wow I can’t wait to listen to these kids play at a summer music festival some day.”

I have no doubt they will. They’re catchy as hell. I think I’ve gotten about half a dozen or so of my friends hooked on them, too.

They played their entire catalog for the 100 or so of us at Subterranean (they’re in the process of making a full-length, since they’re a relatively new band) and the entire crowd sang along to every song. The small venue and upbeat music definitely made me feel like I was back in high school… but without the acne or bad eyeliner.

Nightly played a new song for us — called “20-something” — that hasn’t been released yet, which was really cool. Usually new music at a show is hit-or-miss because it’s hard to gauge crowd interest when your audience doesn’t know the words, but everyone at the show listened intently. It was actually pretty cool!

The Nashville-based trio kept expressing their gratitude to be on their first headlining tour and were so excited to be playing in Chicago. It was kind of adorable.

Like The WLDLFE, they also took the time to reply to my social media tags and personally thank me for coming out to see them, which was super cool of them to do.

Here’s the setlist they played (minus their new song, which hasn’t hit Spotify yet).

Anyway. I really can’t wait to see Nightly headlining at Aragon or Riv one of these days, and I really hope they make it to a music festival roster sometime soon. They were such a fun show!
