“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.”
Helen Keller
I’ve had this quote by Helen Keller — written on a sticky note and fixed to one of my four monitors — posted at my work desk since mid-January.
There’s a reason for it.
I’m not even sure how to start or where to begin, so here we go…
I’VE ACCEPTED AN INVITATION TO SERVE IN THE PEACE CORPS!
This coming August, I’ll be moving overseas to work as a TEFL secondary education volunteer for the next two-plus years!
I know… what?! GUYS THIS IS INSANE!
All the exclamation points!
!!!
I got my invitation delivered via email back in late January. I accepted it (after, yunno, I picked my phone up off the floor and stopped screaming), and then got to work undergoing alllll the background and medical checks necessary to depart for service.
There were a lot of them.
I was completely, 100 percent cleared for service June 10, and now, in a few short weeks, I’ll be on a one-way flight to my country of service, with all my worldly possessions packed into two 50-pound checked bags.
I’ve been overwhelmed with every imaginable emotion since January. Opting to “give up” my “dream job” and my “dream city” definitely wasn’t an easy decision, but right now, I feel like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.
I’ll be sharing more later — about my country of service, my application process, my departure process, my timeline, etc. — but after biting my tongue for pretty much all of 2019, I had to share something!
So, onward! To new challenges, new experiences and new adventures.
I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.
