Hello Tahoe National Forest!

October 20, 2021 February 5, 2022 Randi1231 views

Wheeeew. After a bit of a drive (and a stop at Yosemite National Park!) I made it to my new home on the Tahoe National Forest earlier this week!

A rare sighting: Randi in uniform.

Oh, yeah, some news! I get to spend the next four months living and working on the Tahoe National Forest, based here in northern California!

If you’re not aware, a lot of federal agencies offer cool opportunities for “details,” which are basically short-term temporary work assignments. Here in the Forest Service, we offer 90-to-120-day details on other forests or in regional offices. They’re a really great opportunity for forest employees to temporarily try out a new role in a new environment. Not only do they give Forest Service employees a chance to learn new skills, they also give forests a chance to learn from the employee detailing in.

I was lucky enough to land a 120-day detail (and temporary promotion!) as a Public Affairs Officer on the Tahoe National Forest. This is just a little bit of a step up from my permanent full-time job (Deputy Public Affairs Officer) on the Coconino.

(By “step up,” I mean I’m slashing the “deputy” part of my title. I’ll be part of this forest’s leadership team AND I’ll be supervising? Oh man.)

I’m really excited to have a few months to explore everything in the Lake Tahoe area! While I won’t be directly working on Lake Tahoe itself (the Tahoe National Forest itself is REALLY cool, but doesn’t include Lake Tahoe), I’ll definitely be adventuring as much as possible while I’m stationed in this part of the country.

I’m already booked for some fun work adventures — like an overnight field trip and a whitewater rafting trip down the Yuba River — later this week. I can’t wait!

Let’s adventure.
