Alright, I’m bringing this one back!
Sometimes I have a really hard time believing I used to run this thing like a fashion blog, because now that I’m A.) older, B.) stuck in a pandemic, C.) caring very, VERY little about what people think, D.) working a job that requires a uniform most days, and E.) more focused on sustainability, I wear a lot of the same things day in and day out.
This has been exacerbated by two recent(ish) stints living out of suitcases! If you don’t remember, I could only bring two checked bags with me to Peace Corps, and — while I brought more than two suitcases with me to my detail assignment on the Tahoe National Forest — I definitely packed light since I had to fit several months’ worth of stuff in the back of my two-door Jeep.
Several years ago, I did a fun little round-up post detailing the dozen or so most-worn objects in my closet every season. Even though I do pretty much wear the same things every day (most of which are detailed on the “Stuff Randi Likes” page), I sometimes invest in new things to wear and obsess over. So, I figured it might be worth bringing this little feature back.
Without further ado, here are the 12 things I’ve worn most this past winter.
Granted… it’s been a weird winter. Now that I’m back in Flagstaff, I’m out fairly often socializing with friends: dinners, bar nights, open mics… yunno, things that don’t involve wearing hiking pants. But, since I spent most of my winter on a temporary work assignment in northern California, I was a lot more isolated and secluded… and I didn’t have the same non-recreating social life I had back home.
Basically, what I’m trying to say, is that I wore my hiking boots a lot more than usual.
Although… it’s totally acceptable to wear hiking boots to dinner in Nevada City, Calif. And in Flagstaff, for that matter, but sometimes I just like getting dressed up and looking cute, OK?!
Anyway. My limited social life this past winter meant that most of the things I wore over the past few months were either loungewear for working from home OR activewear for working from the field/ for recreating for fun.

- Patagonia Synchilla fleece pullover. I own several Patagonia fleeces and I honestly don’t know why I only brought one with me to my detail on the Tahoe. I wore this basically every single weekend when I’m out skating, hiking, snowshoeing or whatever. If it wasn’t constantly sweaty and gross, I would also probably throw it on for meetings.
- Danner Mountain Light hiking boots. If I didn’t need waterproof hiking boots (or, if I was going on shorter hikes in the snow), I wore these.
- Patagonia NanoPuff jacket. While it was usually warm enough in California that I didn’t need to wear this as a final layer while out recreating, I usually stuffed this inside my hiking pack juuuust in case I stopped moving long enough to need it.
- Prana Halle hiking pants. I typically wear leggings if I’m out hiking, but if I need to keep it appropriate for a work-related event or want the added bonus of a water-resistant material (say, if I’m snowshoeing), I’ll wear these.
- SmartWool 250 Base Layer bottoms. I’m not crazy about these because they stretch and sag so much after a single wear, but they’re the best merino wool base layer bottoms I can find.
- Patagonia Capilene Midweight Crew Neck. The Patagonia Capilene line is my favorite synthetic baselayer line. I have a few of them, and I usually use the midweight one during winter activities.
- L.L. Bean Wicked Good slippers. I constantly have cold feet and I wear these religiously every winter, and in my Tahoe cabin was no exception.
- Levi’s Wedgie jeans. I packed one pair of jeans with me for my detail and this was it, so I wore them anywhere that isn’t a hiking trail pretty much.
- Birkenstock Arizona slide sandals. It was usually warm enough in Grass Valley/ Nevada City that I could get away with wearing these on walks to Safeway or around town.
- Landmark Project Smokey Bear sweatshirt. I feel like it’s acceptable to look like a slob while working from home if I’m wearing this sweatshirt. Right? RIGHT?!
- Lululemon On The Fly 7/8 pants. For some reason, these feel more appropriate than leggings when I’m working? I wear them during work, then change out of them when I run or do yoga.
- Lululemon Speed Up High Rise 4″ shorts. I picked up running again while out on the Tahoe (yay!) so I broke these out a few times a week.
There ya have it. Like I said, I’m a creature of habit. So, we’ll see if I keep this little mini-series up this time around, or if I give up after two seasons because I wear the same Birkenstocks and leggings literally every single day.
