This past weekend was busy, but fairly productive.
Ryan and I had back-to-back parties on Saturday afternoon/ evening, and we spent all day yesterday getting as much cleaning done as possible.
Late April is always a lot of work around the house for us. I know a lot of people focus on spring cleaning (and we’re definitely not an exception), but for us, it’s also time for us to prepare for the potential upending of our lives: aka fire season.
In addition to getting all the deep cleaning done (it’s SO nice to come home to a clean house after a 16-plus-hour day), we do quite a bit to prepare for the unexpected wildfires that completely uproot our household.
A lot of that includes food. As much as I always try to do grocery shopping and meal prepping year-round on Sunday nights to prepare for busy office days and studio nights throughout the work week, I become absolutely militant about it during fire season.
I get very hangry very easily, so knowing I have a few healthy meals at the ready is one less thing to worry about when work beckons.
So with that said — my Sundays now focus on cleaning, running errands and prepping food for the week.
Here’s everything I ate yesterday while doing all of the above.
I slept in a bit yesterday, and then started my day by heading straight to the yoga studio for a 9 a.m. hot class.
Afterward, I got home and had some black coffee (and my multivitamins) while I dove straight into chores.
I’m taking shampooing the carpets, dusting the baseboards, washing the curtains, cleaning the walls — all of it.
If I’m moving around enough, I forget that I’m hungry — which was definitely the case yesterday! I realized at almost 1 p.m. that I hadn’t eaten, so I tried a new greens powder I picked up from Whole Foods last week.
(Fire food is notoriously calorie-dense and heavy, so I’ve come to love anything that helps me get some extra nutrients and is not a breakfast burrito during the summers.)
Afterward, I dove back into cleaning. I didn’t get to head grocery shopping until about 3 p.m. or so, so I had a very late late lunch.
I’ve been using the Paprika app for the last year or so to keep track of recipes, grocery lists and meal plans, and it’s a huge help when it comes to meal planning and grocery shopping.
I picked up a bag of honey roasted almonds while grocery shopping (I have a major sweet tooth, and this is why I try to avoid grocery shopping while I’m hungry) and had a handful while I cooked myself lunch.
Lunch was one of my favorite easy go-to make-at-home meals: sweet potatoes topped with half an avocado and a fried egg.
After that, I got back into cleaning, and came up for air just long enough to make myself a mug of decaffeinated chai tea with a splash of oat milk and maple syrup.
I love chai tea but I’ve been trying to stop consuming caffeine after noon. This is the first time I’ve tried the Celestial Seasonings “Bengal Spice,” and I like it a lot better than any other caffeine-free chai brand I’ve found. It smells overwhelmingly like licorice, but it tasted a lot better than it smelled.
Finally, after finishing all the cleaning, Ryan and I had about an hour to relax before bed.
I had leftover lasagna on the couch while we watched hockey playoffs.
I found this vegetarian lasagna recipe earlier this year, and it’s my and Ryan’s absolute favorite. I’ve tended to stray away from lasagna for years. Veggie lasagna is notoriously tricky because vegetables tend to leak out water, and then everything gets soggy and mushy.
Not this recipe! Cooking the vegetables into a tomato sauce makes a world of difference. I make this recipe every month and leftovers freeze incredibly well. We follow the recipe almost exactly: We leave out the basil if we don’t have it on hand, and we add about two tablespoons of crushed red pepper flakes because we love spice.
Ryan went to sleep before me, so I had a bit of time to switch off hockey and do some reading before I joined him.
And that was it! Bring it on, Monday.
