Our wedding’s save the dates (aka: don’t send postcards, no matter how cute you think they are!)

March 30, 2026 March 29, 2026 Randi154 views

Not only did Ryan and I finally got our shit together enough to take our engagement photos…

We also got our shit together enough to order and send our save the dates.

Honestly, a miracle we actually got them sent out before the wedding at the rate our lives are going.

OF course there was a touch of a fiasco involved in the whole process.

So, now I’m here to tell you no matter how much you want to save like $30 and no matter how cute and retro you think postcards are, do NOT use them as save the dates.

Ryan and I hand-address and mail postcards every year for our holiday cards.

So, naturally, we didn’t hesitate to design and send postcards for our save the dates.

Look at us!
And the deets.

Pros of postcards:

  • They’re eco-friendly (less mail to end up in the trash)
  • They’re budget-friendly (not only do they cost less to order, they cost less to send: postcard stamps are cheaper than first-class stamps)
  • They’re adorable in a vintage-sort-of-way.

Cons of postcards:

  • Kind of almost everything else?

Since Ryan and I have been mailing out our holiday cards for years without any adverse effects, we figured our save the dates wouldn’t be any different.

BOY were we wrong.

Between the barcodes being placed on the wrong side of the postcards and the cancellation stamps bleeding onto our faces… whoops!

Anyway.

We ordered our save the date postcards via The Knot, and even though we had all of the issues with mailing them, we do think they were adorable!

Yes, we did stick our own save the date on our own fridge.

Plus, again, it’s not like anyone saves their save the dates! At least all the important info was conveyed (wedding websites for the win) before our faces make it to the trash (or, optimistically, recycling bins) of our friends and family.

So, there’s your warning! Spend the extra $30. Buy the envelopes.
