Happy random Tuesday, you guys. I’m a little belated with this post because I’ve been a little busy with work. For those of you who don’t know, my newspaper cut three newsroom positions about a month ago, knocking us down to a staff of six full time reporters, editors, photographers, proofreaders and community engagement editors. Yikes. So I’ve been a bit busy with 60-hour work weeks over here while we try to get a lot of the work shifted around and priorities rearranged. However, I still got to take a nice break and enjoy two weekends ago.
Happy anniversary Jake!
A little over a year ago, I had been spending every waking moment texting this guy. And one night, the day before I left for a monumental trip to Washington D.C. for Invisible Children, this guy asked me to be his girlfriend. Awe. Of course I said yes, and even though he was impatient and asked a little early, before he had time to buy me pizza and flowers (because that’s how you woo a 23-year-old graduate student). Before I go any further, have I ever told you guys the story of how we met?
It’s definitely a story for the kids. Last Halloween, I was invited to go to O’Kelly’s/ Wayside, the typical dark and overcapacity college bar with $1 Busch Light specials and sticky floors, with my good friend Kelly, who was talking to this guy. This guy was there with his wingman. My friend and the guy immediately got into a pretty in-depth conversation about all things Disney movies and Harry Potter, so I kind of stood by and people watched with my beer, while dressed in a totally not work appropriate Princess Leia costume. Not wanting me to feel awkward, this guy’s wingman approached me an hour into the night and struck up a conversation.
Lumberjack Jake: “So… uh… how do you know Kelly?”
Princess Leia Randi: “Oh, we go to church together.”
Lumberjack Jake: “YOU GO TO CHURCH?!” (At this point, his face conveyed a look of insane disbelief and shock that the girl standing before him in the metal bikini was capable of setting foot inside a church.)
After LumberJake got over his initial judgment, he actually struck up a conversation, and realized that, hey, we have a lot in common. From there, he bought me a cheap beer and we moved over to the dance floor, where we shared our first kiss. Soooo not romantic, but whatever.
What was romantic was our anniversary date.
Back to the dessert.
I surprised Jake a bit early with his anniversary present, and on our Nov. 15 anniversary, Jake surprised me with a dinner at my favorite restaurant, the Melting Pot, and then tickets to a Red Wings game!
If you’ve never been to the Melting Pot, I definitely recommend it! We started with an assortment of breads, tortilla chips, sour apples, raw veggies and cold cuts for Jake to dip in a cheddar beer sauce. We also each had a salad, and for dessert, we had the amazing assortment pictured above with a marshmallow chocolate Oreo dip. Did I mention this was Jake’s first time ever trying chocolate fondue?
We’ll definitely be back, I’m sure. After dinner, I got to throw my Red Wings sweater on overtop of my leather leggings and suede heels and climb up these steps to the happiest place on Earth!
Unfortunately, the Red Wings lost during a shootout after overtime to the Washington Capitals, but Jake and I still had a great time celebrating our first year together with hockey and cheap beer.
I’m beyond excited to spend another year with this man!
